Tōshōdai-ji in Nara is the head temple of the Ritsu school of Japanese Buddhism, personally founded and directed by the eminent Chinese Tang Dynasty monk, Master Jianzhen, in 759 AD. Its core building, the Kondō (Main Hall), is the only surviving Kondō from the Nara period. Its architectural style preserves the majestic spirit and wooden construction techniques of China's High Tang era and is designated as a National Treasure. The temple not only enshrines a superb group of Buddhist statues, also honored as National Treasures, but also safeguards the National Treasure seated statue of Monk Jianzhen, crafted using the "hollow-core dry lacquer" technique. This statue is remarkably lifelike and vivid, regarded as an enduring symbol of cultural exchange between China and Japan. The entire temple complex, as an integral part of the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara," was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
